Mountain man
Artist Statement:
For this project I chose to do a linoleum print. I started by taking a photo and putting it into high contrast and then tracing the shadowing of the face. Then I did the pattern in the hair and the beard and transferred that to the linoleum. Then I drew the more organic shapes around the sides as almost a frame. Then I began carving the linoleum. I did a lot of prints onto different colored paper and different types of paper with different inks. I played around more with the ink then I usually get to and I was able to get a gradient effect using different inks. My prints did not come out as detailed as I had hoped, in most of the prints you could not really see all the detail I had put into craving the linoleum. Although the prints did not come out as I had hoped I can tell that a grew with this project. I got a lot better at carving, especially carving small intricate shapes. I also learned different techniques with the ink and the actual printing process and how to better clean the linoleum after I am finished. Although the prints did not come out exactly as I planned I am pleased with the project overall because I can see a growth and I feel like I learned some new things.
