Styrofoam Totem pole
Progress:
Finished Project and Artist Statement:
For this project I decided to make a totem pole. Totem poles are carvings done by the people of the Pacific Northwest to show cultural beliefs, clan, legends, and cultural events. I decided to make mine out of styrofoam so I began by cutting squares and rectangles on the band saw. Then I sanded the edges to round them out then drew characters on them with sharpie. After than I began to use the Dremel to carve them out. I had never used a Dremel before and I ended up really liking it. After the pieces were carved I painted them to look like stone with blue and burgundy accents. After all my pieces were completely finished I glued them all together to make the pole then polyurethaned it. I enjoyed this project a lot and it turned out better than i had envisioned it.
